Materials Science Beamline

Welcome to the Materials Science Beamline! It is a versatile laboratory suitable for experiments in materials science, surface physics, catalysts and organic molecules on various surfaces. Before closing the Elettra synchrotron in July 2025 it provided linearly polarized tunable light in a broad energy range (22-1000 eV) from a bending magnet source for "classical" UPS and XPS with high energy resolution and tunable excitation energy for the best photoionization cross sections, together with resonant photoemission (RPES) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopies. The MSB was built in cooperation between the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Charles University in Prague and Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste.

Proposal Submission

We invite all users and collaborators to discuss their proposals with the beamline staff before the submission deadline. This is crucial for a careful assessment of the experiment feasibility and may lead to improvements in the proposed experimental plan. Our website provides a wealth of information on experiment feasibilty and proposal submission. Note that proposals must be submitted via Virtual Unified Office (VUO), selecting "Submit a new CERIC proposal".

Call for proposals open

Only Mg and Al anodes of the X-ray source can be used as photon source. Please contact the beamline staff well before the deadline to discuss the technical questions.

Next deadlines for proposal submission for experiment allocation from January to June 2026 will be:
  • 1 September 2025 at 17:00 for less experienced users that need to have their proposals pre-evaluated, and
  • 1 October 2025 at 17:00 definitive deadline.
